How to solve the ’network sharing of an external drive’ problem ?

Cannot share your external HD or USB drive ? Got a solution for you.

Having trouble sharing your external USB drive or external HD ? Here you will find the solution to what seems not to be a network problem but a software problem.

CONTEXT

THE PROBLEM

You cannot access shared directories on your external hard drive ? I might have a solution for you since I might have met the problem as you.

I acquired a Freecom Hard Drive (USB and Firewire) and could not share my hard drive on my network. Basically, any directories (or the complete drive) from the external hard drive I share could be seen on the network but not accessed.

Each time I wanted to access a shared directory, I got the message :

« "xxxx is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command." »

I found on the Internet many other users reporting exactly the same problem with different hard drives :

- "Windows xp external usb drive network sharing"

- "Network Sharing Question"

- Server Storage error in XP

- "File sharing external hard drive on network"

So I went to look for solutions on the Internet and actually found one.

FAST ANALYSIS

Many reported it might due to Norton Antivirus which change a value in the registry (of the computer which hosts the external drive). Actually, I had Norton Antivirus on my computer (that I had removed previously). I checked the entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ LanmanServer\Parameters for ’IRPStackSize’. It was set to 11.

SOLUTION

For Windows XP users, first check that you have activated the GUEST user. If it is not activated, it might be the cause of your problem. If it still does not work, proceed to the following step(s).

I used the solution provided by Microsoft -> Antivirus Software may cause event ID 2011 or same solution is provided here.

Basically, go to registry entry (on the computer which is connected to the external drive) : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
Create or modify the IRPStackSize (DWORD)
Increase value by 3 in decimal. My value was 11. I put it to 15.
Reboot and it should work.

This solution seems not to work on Western Digital Hard Drive.

ADDITIONAL STEPS

If it doesn’t work properly, add the following steps to complete the solution :

Source : ChicagoTech

1) The registry value IRPstackSize may be not explicitly present. To increase the value of the parameter, go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ LanmanServer\Parameters.

If the key is not present, choose Add Value in the Registry Editor. The Value Name should be IRPStackSize and the Data Type is REG_DWORD.

2) Remove any unnecessary entries from this value in the registry, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\NullSessionPipes.

3) If the machine has a non-zero PagedPoolSize in the Registry, you need to re-set it by going to HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management and double-click on PagedPoolSize and set to 0.

4) Disable Norton antivirus to see if that will fix the problem."
